Never used Ambergris, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE hahah, even though it's tempting.
But I looked into hyraceum.
I made the tincture like Dan Riegler suggests it: Grind as finely as possible, then put in alcohol, macerate for a whole year while shaking daily.
It was at a time I started to experiment more with tinctures for incense.
I bought some quality looking dropper bottles for easy use and stored a bunch of tinctures I had made in them, only to find that they are not diffusion tight and all dried out.
After that, I got so frustrated that I basically stopped altogether with the tinctures.
Hyraceum is interesting. When I had my best friend take a sniff (without telling him what it was), he said it smells like the elephant stable of a Circus. I found that super interesting, as I read somewhere, that hyraxes are actually related to them.
So, you definitely smell what it is, but I also sense an amber-like note in it when I smell it from a bit of a distance.
If you are curious about it, give it a go!
You said in the chat that you reached out to Dan about this?
What did he say?
